Civitas is a non-profit organization located in St. Louis that offers free programs and events to middle and high students throughout the state. The Civitas Model United Nations approach is not a debate, but a dialogue between students representing countries. Preparing for and participating in a Model UN simulation is an excellent way to get students to creatively problem-solve real issues going on in the world. Examining recent and systemic international problems, especially those that violate basic human rights, requires a lot of critical analysis and thinking to prepare step-by-step resolutions for those problems. The actual Model UN session has students from many schools come together to role-play as delegates who communicate their ideas for addressing global problems by presenting resolutions they write in advance. Students then collaborate with one another to strengthen the ideas before voting on them. Civitas staff helps prepare students for their Model UN session through scheduled visits to classes or clubs. School visits are required at the middle school level and optional at the high school level.
